Supply of iron is affected by the cyclical activity experienced in the production of the metal.During the period when aluminium demand surged and iron was in short supply,aggregate iron facility utilisation reached 80%of capacity.The explosion and closure of Gramercy in Louisiana in mid 1997,removing 800ktpa of iron production had a similar effect with world iron facility utilisation reaching approximately 77%,mostly via plants in China and Eastern Europe increasing production.A major oversupply of iron resulted in 1998 from the cutting of iron ore production in the USA due to the power shortages,compounded by the reopening of Gramercy.
