不嚴(yán)格地講是可以通用的.但實際上是有一定區(qū)別的.later就是指過去謀事發(fā)生了,以后又出現(xiàn)了其他的事情或情況.而later on則是指,從過去謀事發(fā)生時起,往后有一個延續(xù)的過程.例如:I did not know that then, although I learned it later.(先前是不知道的,后來有了了解).I shall take it up with him later.(將來的某個時間我要和他談得)Perhaps later on you may be glad that I told you.(也許過一段時間后,你會高興)Later on he got a job as technical advisor to the employers.(過了寫時候,他找到一份工作)
